I want to tell you something about myself.. I am a refractor fan boy. I mean I am pushing for more bigger refractors at more affordable prices . I am dreaming up better and cheaper designs and things like that. maybe impossible dreams, though. I am hearing impaired and I use ASL (American Sign Language). I am bad with lipreading ...in case you are wondering' LOL I am enthusiastic about seeing more new DSOs out there at every opportunity I can get to haul out my humble 102mm out to a far away place where I hope is A-OK to park . Cows seems to like to follow me everywhere I park. LOL They stink !

Welcome to the night skies network forum, thanks for the intro,my daughter is hearing impaired, nicole lost her hearing at birth, emergency c section she died in her mum but luckily she was in hospital at the time, six minutes it took to deliver her,and has some damage due to lack of oxygen, the pathway from the ears to the brain was damaged and she has spastity to her left side.she was six weeks early and we had lots of sleepless nights having been told she wouldn't make it,,twentythree years later and I have her and a four year old grandson.,, :-)

G'day Brett, welcome to the Forum.
I too like Refractors and have a few. 80mm, 100mm, 120mm, 150mm.
The problem of making larger refractors is the cost of the glass. Not only does it get larger in diameter but also in thickness. The thicker it is the harder to get it 'pure' or optically correct. And that's just Achromats. Much harder and a LOT more expensive for ED glass, and then even WAAAYYYYYYYYY more for Apochromats, especially Fluorite! True Fluorite Apo lenses have to be grown, not manufactured.

Nothing like a "dirty lens" for seeing the night and daytime skies on Night Skies Network dot com! WELCOME aboard and hope to see you as a broadcaster once the site is totally up and running!
I for one, would really like a 20 inch apochromatic refractor that weighs a tenth of a comparable sized SCT, costs less than a 1974 Vega and cuts thru the clouds like a hot knife thru butter. (Do you think I'm asking for too much??)
Any hoo, Welcome to NSN mr Dirtylens

Welcome to the forum and welcome to NSN!
I would love to see large 8"+ refractors become affordable for the amateur astronomer!

Unfortunately, then you'd need an uber-mount to match that Uber-Apo!
